Pregnancy Massage

Receiving massage while you are pregnant is a great drug-free way to manage the aches and pains that develop. It can also assist with stress, fatigue and anxiety. Pregnancy massage focuses on proper positioning, focused work for the special needs of pregnant women and an evaluation of any precautions that need to be considered prior to each treatment.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

  • Relieves stress on weight bearing joints (low back, hips, pelvis, ankles)
  • Addresses areas of chronic pain and tension such as the neck and back
  • Reduces swelling - especially common in the feet and ankles
  • Reduces fatigue, stress and anxiety
  • Increases relaxation both physically and emotionally
  • Encourages deeper breathing which benefits mother and baby
  • Eases and helps to balance the digestive system
  • Improves circulation which bring more oxygen and nutrients to mother and baby

Precautions

Precautions that the therapist needs to be aware of prior to treatment would be a diagnosis of a high-risk pregnancy, pre-term labor or possible miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure or deep vein thrombosis. These conditions would require medical approval and modifications or delay of treatment.

Postpartum Massage

Postpartum massage is just as important as pregnancy massage as the new mother adjusts to her pre-pregnancy state and adjusts to her new role as a mother. It is very common for the pain and tension in the low back and hips to be replaced by pain and tension of the neck, upper back and shoulders. These aches and pains do subside once the mothers body starts to adjust to caring for her baby.

Benefits of Post Partum Massage

  • Promotes healing, especially after a caesarian section
  • Aids in the restoration of the structural alignment of the spine, hips and joints
  • Improves muscle tone and functioning, as well as overall physiology
  • It is especially helpful as the new mother adapts to the stresses of carrying and caring for her newborn
